Performers

Don Tiki
South Seas fantasies beckon with the neo-exotica group, Don Tiki. They draw inspiration from the original Mid-Century masters of the exotica sound, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and Les Baxter and bring their evocative music into the 21st Century. In fact, Martin Denny gave the band his seal of approval when he played on three tracks on their 1997 debut album, The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki. Don Tiki’s last release, South of the Boudoir, garnered the Best Album of the Year/Adult Contemporary at the Hawaii Music Awards show.

Don Tiki is a band of exceptional talents, and their music will transport you to an island paradise where sensual tropical fantasies still exist - especially after that third Mai Tai. Their gorgeous dancers and elaborate costumes add to the enchantment of their mesmerizing and always sold-out performances.

They have performed at the fabled tiki palace, The Kahiki in Colombus, OH, headlined Wassermusik, a summer music festival in Berlin, played Las Vegas several times, stole the show at Tiki Oasis `11, dazzled the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles with their Hot Lava Holiday Show and, of course, rule the jungle kingdom of Honolulu, their home base. Don Tiki’s year end holiday shows at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts have attendees simultaneously laughing and dancing in the aisles!

Don Tiki is a creative collaboration of Kit “Perry Coma” Ebersbach and Lloyd “Fluid Floyd” Kandell. The band features Hawaii's top musicians with cumulative experience ranging from jazz fusion to world beat to the Honolulu Symphony to Waikiki Showrooms. A touring ensemble complete with swaying dancers is set to hit the road from here to eternity with a swanky and exotic revue.

Raiatea Helm
At 21 years old, she was one of the youngest performers to attend the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California. It was a remarkable achievement when you consider that she comes from the tiny island of Molokai, Hawai'i, a mere wisp of volcanic land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Raiatea Helm made history in 2006 as Hawai‘i’s first solo female vocalist to ever receive a Grammy Nomination for her sophomore CD “Sweet and Lovely.” Just 21 years old, she was one of the youngest performers to attend the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California.

In 2009, Raiatea Helm was honored with the privilege of performing at the Presidential Inaugural Ball in Washington DC as part of the festivities related to the recent election of Barack Obama.

The Arts and Leisure Desk of the New York Times (February 5, 2006) ran a story on Raiatea that listed Grammy Nominated artists (of 2006) who had produced remarkable work commenting, “[She] sings in the high-voiced throwback leo ki‘eki‘e style without a hint of kitsch. Her second album, “Sweet and Lovely” is poised and utterly elegant.”

Raiatea Helm’s recently released her new recording entitled “Keola Beamer & Raiatea” debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard World Music Charts.

Bryan Tolentino

Benny Chong
Bryan Tolentino is a self-taught ‘ukulele player who began playing the ‘ukulele at the tender age of 10. His early influences were the musical groups, “The Son’s of Hawaii” and “The Sunday Manoa.” After graduating from Saint Louis School in 1979, he and some friends formed a musical group called “The Side Order Band.” Although their paths have taken them in different directions, they have reunited to share in a friend’s vision to “just play” and to “make MAGIC.” Bryan released his first solo album “Ka ‘Ukulele Lele” in 2005, a mixture of Hawaiian, contemporary and original songs. It is a wonderful blend of Bryan’s creativity and diversity with the ‘ukulele.   In the field of solo ‘ukulele playing, the number of recording artists who specialize in jazz can be counted on one hand. Bill Tapia and Lyle Ritz are two names that immediately come to mind. Now with this historic CD, Benny Chong’s name can be officially added to that “endangered” list.

Benny taught himself to play the ‘ukulele when he was about 11 years old. After nine years or so, he virtually put the ‘ukulele away for some thirty-five years. When I met him in 1964, he was the guitarist with the Ali’is, the band that backed up Don Ho. In 2000, I invited him to be one of the four artists in “The Art of Solo ‘Ukulele”, a concert series that led to a CD and a public TV special. These events revitalized his interest in the ‘ukulele, resulting in his debut album Ukulele Jazz. More About Benny Chong on UkuleleJazz.com

Byron Yasui

Aidan James
Byron Yasui taught himself to play the ‘ukulele when he was 13 years old. He played it for recreation from 1953 to 1960, then put it aside when he started college and became a string bassist. In 1998, the ‘Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum invited him to be one of the four ‘ukulele soloists in a four city concert tour on the east coast.

Then in 2000, he was asked to put on and play in a series of concerts featuring four ‘ukulele soloists, which he called “The Art of Solo ‘Ukulele”. From that point, he started seriously playing the ‘ukulele again. He was a featured soloist in many ‘ukulele festivals throughout the U.S. and in two Honolulu Symphony Pops concerts. He has also given ‘ukulele clinics and private lessons at various festivals and gatherings, including those in Portland (Oregon), Bethesda (Maryland), Indianapolis (Indiana), Plano (Texas), Santa Cruz (California), ‘Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum Expositions in New Jersey and Rhode Island, and three of Keola Beamer’s Aloha Music Camps on Moloka’i. In 2006, he released his solo ‘ukulele CD, “Anahola”.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii,  Aidan James had a calling for the entertainment world. With his classic “hapa-haole” looks, he modeled for print campaigns, acted in TV shows and commercials since he was a baby. He picked up music naturally at the age of 2 and started taking ukulele lessons at 4 years old at the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios in Honolulu.

At just 8 years old, Aidan became a “youtube sensation.”  His  videos of Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” are viral hits and has earned over 20 million views which continues to grow daily.  When Train came to Honolulu for a concert, lead singer Pat Monahan brought Aidan up on stage.  Later, Pat was quoted in a national radio interview for ABC stating his favorite cover of “Hey Soul Sister” is by “ an eight year old kid from Hawaii named Aidan…he’s like a virtuoso ukulele player, a prodigy.  It’s incredible, he can wail on it !”
Aidan has traveled and performed in California, Oregon, Washington State, New York and Japan. He connects with his fans from all over the world via twitter, facebook, instagram and youtube. Aidan proudly plays Kamaka Ukulele.

Currently, Aidan is working on material for his first full length album.
